Design and Looks
The phone stands at 109x59x17mm and weighs about 65K colors. The phone is a bulky because of the slide out keypad but overall is designed nicely with a nice finish on the surface giving it a nice grip in your palms. The device supports rounded edges and slides in easily through various pocket sizes.
The top of the phone comes along with the power button. The right side of the phone contains two buttons, one for invoking the communication manager which gives the option of selecting or deselecting various wireless functionalities on the phone. The second button gives the access to the voice mail with one tap.
The p4350 when slide out comes out with the QWERTY keypad which is an excellent feature from HTC. The sliding mechanism is safe and does a good job. The keys are nicely placed on the keyboard and have a plastic or a rubbery feel to their surface making it nice and smooth to type. They all come with a white soft light and each of the keys on the keypad have dual purpose and can be accessed by pressing the Function key.
The screen on the HTC HERALD P4350 is a 2.8 incher with a resolution of 240x320 pixels and is able to display 65,000 colors. The sunlight eligibility is good and does a good job even in striking bright sunlight. Below the screen is the 5 way directional keypad with a hint of metal finish on its surface along with the call and end keys.
The phone runs sadly on the older Windows 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition and not the new Windows Mobile 6. It's powered by the OMAP processor from Texas Instruments running at 200MHz. The phone offers 64MB of Ram and 128MB of Rom. There is also an expansion slot available capable of supporting the MicroSD format for further memory expansion.
On the communication front the phone is a quad band device but lacks 3G and comes bundled with GPRS and EDGE support, Bluetooth (2.0) and Wi-Fi ( 802.11b/g).
The camera on the P4350 is a 2 megapixel and comes without a flash and auto focus. There is a self portrait mirror near the camera for self portraits. The camera interface is simple and not a complication which makes it easier to shoot pictures. The picture quality though is average and does not appeal to users looking for a camera phone.
Overall the phone stands out to be an average performer considering the exclusion of the Windows Mobile 6 which sports out many features compared to the sluggish Windows present on this phone. If you are not bothered by the lack of 3G and the windows 6 is not your cup of tea then you could be all right with this phone but a hint of advice would be to stick out for a Win 6.
