Design and Looks
The dimensions of the phone make it very easy to handle and can easily slip through any of the pocket size. The body of the phone is complete plastic and comes with a nice metallic finish. The curved edges make it very appealing and give a nice soft rounded feel in the palm. The phone comes in multiple colours including brown, gold and blue.
The screen on the HTC Touch 3G is 2.8 inches and can output a 240x320 pixels with 65K colours. The smaller screen size makes it easier for the thumb to access various onscreen features such as the scroll function. The stylus is included too with the phone which can be handy.
HTC's TouchFlo finger-friendly interface running on the top of Windows Mobile operating system masks many of its inadequacies. The phone includes the 2D version of TouchFlo compared to the new 3D version. Though the animations are less flashy it makes the phone easier to use and much more responsive.
The phone's processing power comes from 528Mhz Qualcomm processor. The memory on the phone consists of 256MB of ROM and 192MB of RAM. There is expansion slot available on the phone can be used for increasing the memory capacity with the help of the microSD cards.
The handset features a 3.2 megapixel camera but the images shot lack the detail and appear to be washed out. The camera interface is normal and supports minimalistic features. The camera does not have any auto focus or flash feature on it.
HTC Touch 3G misses out on the accelerometer, therefore the screen does not switch between landscape and portrait view automatically. The browser on the phone also lacks a menu option to allow viewing of web pages in the natural format. With the 3G included the browsing speeds are spectacular and are the highlight of this phone. It remains to be seen as how it performs in India with the implementation of 3G. But outside the speeds have been phenomenal making it a treat to browse pages.
The phone has an inbuilt music player and supports a ten band customizable graphic equalizer on board with 21 presets. Windows media player plays all the standard videos on the phone. DivX/Xvid or 3gp videos cannot be played on the standard player and therefore the consumer has to invest in another video to be able to play it.
The phone comes along with a built in GPS receiver. The A-GPS uses the Google Maps on the phone. On the battery front the device does good for two days with moderate use and can be still improved with the onscreen settings if necessary.
Overall the highlight of the phone is its 3G feature but the lack of landscape feature on the browser makes it difficult to get the rich experience. The phone packs in decent amount of features and proves out to be good option in the business category.
